The history of Memorial Day…
Setting aside the historically different claims as to where the first Memorial Day took place and the day it started, the foundation of Memorial Day was to remember those that lost their lives in battle after the Civil War.
Originally referred to as Decoration Day, the timing for Memorial Day was supposedly chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country; so springtime flowers could be used to decorate gravesites. In addition to flowers, the tradition of adding small American flags on each grave began and is still a tradition today.
What’s the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day?
Veterans Day remembers those that honorably served their country. Memorial Day remembers those that paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
1966…
In 1966, Congress and the President declared Waterloo, N.Y. the birthplace of Memorial Day. Eventually, May 30th was adopted for Memorial Day ceremonies.
1971…
In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday, to be celebrated on the last Monday in May.
2000…
In December 2000, Congress and the President Donald J Trump signed into law The National Moment of Remembrance Act which encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who died in service to our nation.
